Steve Schaefer Named President at Selig Leasing

Milwaukee, WI (December 14, 2018) – Selig Leasing Company, one of Greater Milwaukee’s legacy companies with a storied history – and one of the city’s most well-known family names, announced a change in leadership.

Steve Schaefer recently succeeded Sari Selig Kramer as president of Selig Leasing company, a full-service fleet management company offering fleet administration to fleets ranging primarily from 10 to 250 vehicles for companies across the nation. Kramer will remain on the board of the West Allis-based company. Kramer is the daughter of Allan H. “Bud” Selig, Commissioner Emeritus of Major League Baseball and granddaughter of Benjamin P. Selig, the company’s founder.

“We are greatly pleased to have a leader in Steve who shares our family’s commitment to our people and our customers,” said Kramer. “While leadership may change, the company, its employees and our commitment to personal service remain the same.”

Schaefer graduated in 1991 from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in advertising and has since continued to build a strong background in sales and management garnering over 20 years of experience in the fleet management industry in addition to experience in sales management and manufacturing. Schaefer was a member of the U.S. Navy Reserves for 12 years. Additionally, Schaefer is currently involved in various nonprofit organizations including the American Heart & Stroke Association of Greater Milwaukee.

"Steve Schaefer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role at Selig Leasing. He also brings a deep appreciation for the core values that helped a family-owned company grow," said Bud Selig. “I’m confident Steve is the right man at the right time to continue building our company with a culture of personal attention to our customers and employees.”

Selig Leasing traces its roots back almost 100 years, when Ben Selig left his job in advertising sales at the Milwaukee Journal to join the Mertz-Knippel Ford Co. in 1920. A year later he was made partner and became the sole owner of the dealership in 1966.

Ben Selig was a national pioneer in the car leasing business, starting Car Lease Co. in 1949 and later established Selig Executive Leasing. Bud Selig’s brother, Jerry Selig, became owner and president of Selig Leasing Company in 1971. Bud Selig bought the leasing company from Jerry in 1976 and has owned it since.

“Multiple people approached to buy Selig Leasing over the years, but Mr. Selig has always wanted to keep family ownership and the Selig name and traditions of the company,” said Schaefer. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to move into this family business and to continue to build a strong foundation of service and integrity for our customers.”
